Katarina began skating on ice when she was five. Her talent soon became obvious, and she gained entry into a school specifically designed for children with a talent for sports in Karl-Marx-Stadt. Her coach Jutta was also in attendance. Witt made her breakthrough season in 1982 when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. Then, she was dominating the sport with elegance and grace. Olympic success Katarina Wit won gold in ice skating for women during Sarajevo Winter Games 1984. In fact, she didn't win the free skating contest but won gold based on performances during the compulsory figure and short program. Witt became the first female to win in both male and female figure skating in the past since Sonja Hiene. Hall of Fame Witt competed in the Lillehammer Winter Games in 1994 after a successful career acting. Although she didn't get a medal, she impressed her spectators despite finishing seventh. Witt was inducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame by its members in 1995.
